Emalahleni, previously known as Witbank, falls under the Emalahleni Local Municipality in Mpumalanga. The name Emalahleni translates to ‘place of coal’, a commodity that has become synonymous with the town. The strongest economic sector in the area is mining, contributing more than 55% to the Emalahleni economy in 2017. Trade is the second largest industry in Emalahleni with a contribution of 9.1% followed by community services (8,9%) and finance (7.9%) (https://emalahleni.gov.za/v2/).
Due to the large concentration of high-quality coal in the area, there are more than 22 collieries present, owned and operated by a variety of companies. Additionally, there are a number of Eskom power stations in the area which rely on a steady supply of coal from the mines – which in turn generates good business for the local residents. The Emalahleni (Witbank) show is therefore focused on mining, power stations, contractors and smelters and is a major draw card for solution providers. This is MTE’s main annual coal exhibition as new mines and major rehabilitation is taking place in the area continuously.
